He married Emma Catherine Belles, daughter of John Belles and Emma Siglong, on 24 July 1895 at Baptist Church, Dover, Morris County, New Jersey.1 He died on 21 January 1900 at Netcong Township, Morris County, New Jersey.2,3
Charles Sutton appeared on the census of 2 June 1880 in the household of Robert Showers at Rockaway, Morris County, New Jersey.4 He appeared on the census of 1895 in the household of Robert Showers at Netcong, Morris County, New Jersey.5 He was After the commitment of Mrs. Emma K. Sutton, of Netcong, to the Morris County jail, on a warrant sworn out by a brother of her late husband, the coroner's jury clinched the case, on Thursday morning, by the following verdict: "We find that Charles Sutton was killed by the administration of a dose of strychnine, and we find his wife, Emma K. Sutton, administered the fatal dose." The accused woman denies the charge with great vehemence, but that would have greater effect if her past life and reputation were not against her. Mrs. Sutton is about 40 years old, and has a daughter 19 years old. Her maiden name was Emma K. Belles, and most of her life has been raised in Warren county. She has had four husbands, two of whom are alive, and several substitute husbands. David Burdge, her first husband, is still alive, because he left her. George Sherrer is dead and it is alleged that Mrs. S. helped along that event. Her third husband was Cornelius Stackhouse, and he appears to have been the only man who was too sharp for the woman, for after being once tricked, he regained her confidence, sold out her household goods and then kicked her out of his home. Her fourth husband, Charles Sutton, had $1,200 life insurance, and after four years of wedded bliss, he departed very suddenly.
