5 Oct 1820, Seneca Co. NY John Sutton appreared in open court. He was cited to be 53 years and a resident of Junius, gave a statement regarding his service in the Revolutionary War. He stated:
"I was in the company commanded by Captain David Hopkins in the Regiment commanded by Stephen Miner (or Miland) being in the fourth Regiment of Light Dragoons in the State of Pennsylvania and that he has received a Pension from the eighteenth day of March 1818 and that the number of his certificate is (3151). I enlisted in Pennsylvania in the year 77 for during the War. I was discharged out at the close of the War in Lancaster. And my family consists of one son twenty one years of age not capable of taking care of himself and the orphan child of of eight years of age, his father was killed in the late War and that my occupation is a Farmer and that my left arm is broken and I am not able to labor much."
This is followed by a schedule showing an inventory of his possessions, their value and his debt.


Certification of children and marriage of John and Sarah from Symmes C. Henry, Pastor of the 1st Presbyterian chuch of Cranbury, Sept. 1,1840.
"I do hereby certify that the names of Robert and Mary, children of John and Sarah Sutton are registered on the Baptismal Records of the First Presbyterian church of Canbury - The first having been baptized June 19th, 1791 - and the last - viz Mary - July 9th, 1793 - both during the ministry of the Revd Gilbert T. Snowden; who succeeded the Revd Thos Smith and was installed pastor of said church Nov. 24th 1790. The Revd Thos Smith, by whom John and Sarah Sutton were married, who baptized one or two of their oldest children kept no records, or if so, they have been lost, and cannot be found.

She testified on 2 Sep 1840 that she was a witness to marriage of John and Sarah Sutton by Revd Thomas Smith in the village of Cranberry in Middlesex Co. She did recollect the year but was before she was married, which was 17 Jan 1789.

Testmony of Robert B. Sutton, Wayne Co. NY, 2 Jun 1840.
States he is son of John and Sarah Sutton. That John died 10 Aug 1825 in Junius, Seneca Co. NY.

Declaration by Sarah Sutton, 6 May 1840 of Lyons, Wayne Co., NY. Sarah stated she was 74 years on the 18 Jan 1840. She married John after the war. She states she was married to the said John Sutton on 9 Apr 1785 and the marriage was solemnized by Revd Thomas Smith, Pastor of the 1st Presbyterian church or congregation of Cranbury in the County of Middlesex and state of NJ at house of Richard Hanley.


John Sutton declaration of 1 May 1818. States he was aged sixty years 25th of April last. He enlisted in the revoluntionary war as a private in the 4th Regiment of light dragoons in the state of Pennsylvania in the company commanded by Captain David Hopkins in the month of Sept in the year 1777 or 1778 [at Elizabethtown, NJ]. He was discharged in summer of 1783 at Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was in the battle of Cowpens.
