Richard went to the Klondike regions during the gold excitement, and after a year's absence returned to his home in Kansas suffering from pneumonia, being alone on his homeward journey, walking some distance after leaving the train, he was just able to reach his own doorstep when he fell unconscious and never recovered consciousness sufficiently to give any account of his experience. ⁷³¹⁶
