He was adopted between 1927 and 1930 in Warren County, New Jersey. Harold was the biological son of George Aaron Gray and Minnie Trowbridge and was adopted following the death of his mother, Minnie, a few months following his birth.

He appeared on the census on 7 May 1940 in Liberty Township, Warren County, New Jersey.

Harold served in the military between 1941 and 1945: TEC 4 with 42nd Engineer Battalion.

Harold C. Sutton, 39, Barker Mills Road, Hackettstown, died Tuesday in Newton Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Mendham, N.J., he lived in Newton before moving to Hackettstown a year ago.
He was employed as an automobile mechanic in Dover, N.J., and served in the Army during World War II.
Mr. Sutton was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 5360, Newton.
Survivors include his widow, the former Mabel Wildrick; a son, Harold A., and five daughter, Connie, Catherine, Mary, Valerie and Amanda, all at home; his father, James, Hackettstown, and three brothers, James Gray, rochester, N.Y., and George and Lewis Gray, Kenvil, N.J.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton.
