McSherrystown Man Had to Have Toes Amputated Last Year on Account of Gangrene.
The dead body of Thomas Eltz, of McSherrystown, was found lying in a clump of bushes at Eberton, a suburb of York, Friday afternoon, by Noah Stump who was hunting dandelion in that vicinity. Eltz, was 43 years old and leaves a brother and a sister, John Eltz and Mrs. Emma Zinn, both of McSherrystown.
William Fisher, who conducts a grocery store at Eberton, said that Eltz had been in the store Thursday morning between 8 and 9 o'clock and purchased some bread, tomatoes, peas, and other food. A short time later David Houser came to the store and ordered a keg of beer from a brewing company. The empty keg and a pan of soup were found near where the body lay. Some bread was also lying beside the body. It is presumed that the two men spent the day together, and that Eltz became drunk and his companion deserted him.
The coroner stated that death was due to angina pectorus and chronic rheumatism.
George Conlon was able to shed some light on the death of the man. He told the officers that Houser came to the boat house of Ben Sipe Thursday evening shortly after 5 o'clock and told him and Sipe that he had left "Tom" in the bushes above the park, dead drunk. They advised him to go and get his companion telling him that he might die of exposure if left in the open.
Eltz was born and reared at McSherrystown. On March 1, 1916, he was admitted to the York hospital suffering with gangrene of the feet. His feet had been so badly frozen from sleeping in barns, that it was necessary to amputate all the toes on both feet. He remained in the hospital until June.
