Obituary (Weekly Messenger)
Mrs. Sarah Stansberry Sutton, widow of the late James Sutton, of this place, died at her home at Breezedale, Tuesday morning, February 27, 1899, in her 83d year. She was delicately constituted, and suffered at frequent intervals from bronchial attacks, but for ten years past had enjoyed more than ordinarily good health, notwithstanding, the occasional recurrence of the complaint from which she suffered. Mrs. Sutton first came to Blairsville some time in the early 30s, where she taught school prior to the building of the Ladies Seminary. It was while engaged in her profession of teacher that she made the acquaintance of her late husband, to whom she was subsequently married in 1840, and removed to this town where she continued to reside until the time of here death. Several children were the fruit of the marriage, some of them dying early in life, and some later, among these being Elizabeth, the wife of Hon. John P. Blair, of this place, and Clara, the wife T. Elder Ralston, Esq., of St. Louis, Mo. The surviving children are Dr. Stansberry Sutton, of Pittsburgh; Thomas and William, residents of Kansas; 'Jack", at present in Europe; Arthur of near Pittsburgh, and Mrs. Helen Moore, of near Chautauqua, New York. The sickness which culminated in her death began about two weeks ago, and was deemed so serious that her children were notified. Dr. R. S. Sutton and Mrs. Moore were constant in their attendance at the bedside of their mother for some time previous to her death. Mrs. Sutton was a member of the Presbyterian denomination from early childhood and died firm in the faith and hope of her church. Her grandfather, Stansberry, lived in the days of the American Revolution, and during the war and at its close was identified in business with Robert Morris, the first financial agent of the new American Congress and trusted and patriotic friend of George Washington during the most trying times of the war. Upon the death of her grandfather the father of Mrs. Sutton removed from the eastern part of the State and located in Mercer county. Subsequently he located in Ohio, and there when comparatively a young man died, leaving a wife and family. The mother of Mrs. Sutton afterwards located at Canonsburg, Washington county, and it was from there the deceased came to Blairsville. She was a finely educated woman, and deeply interested in the welfare of her children. She was well known and esteemed in social life, and a most entertaining and delightful conversationalist. Her charities were not ostentatious, but she gave freely of her means for the propagation of religion and other worthy and deserving objects. The funeral will take place from her late residents.
Funeral services tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. Dr. Hall.
