• Note: Ethel Given Up, 1909, Bridgeton, Cumberland County, New Jersey. In the fall of 1908, Will S. Beecher and Carrie Maye, a vaudeville couple adopted, Ethel, the four-year-old daughter of Theodore and Lulu Sutton. According to newspaper reports, Beecher and Maye had papers signed by Mrs. Lulu Sutton, witnessed by Mrs. Lewis Mattison, Miss Bert Carr and Mr. Charles Tasso, giving up the child, Ethel Sutton to Mr. and Mrs. Beecher, and waiving all claims to her, the father, Dory Sutton, giving his consent but not signing the papers.
While touring in Chicago, reports were received in Bridgeton, New Jersey, that Mrs. Beecher (Maye) was beating the child when she could not learn her lines. It was reported that Mrs. Beecher had been arrested and fined for her treatment of the child. As a result of an inquiry into the matter the Chicago Court has transferred Ethel to the possession of the Children's Home Society of New Jersey.
A hearing in the Cumberland County Court on March 11, 1910, noted that Mr. Sutton was a man of dissolute and interperate habits who failed to provide suitably for his family and some months ago deserted them entirely. The Court granted an order giving the child into the custody of the Society.
