Oscar Sutton Dead
He was a resident of Wells County for sixty-seven years
Funeral will be Thursday
Oscar F. Sutton, one of the early pioneer settlers of Wells County, passed away at four o'clock Monday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John McCague, on South Johnson street, after a sickness of only about thirty-six hours duration, due to internal hemorrhages. The funeral services will be held in the United Presbyterian Church at Murray, of which he was a member, on Thursday forenoon, and will be conducted by the Revs. C.S. Lester and J.H. String, of this city. Interment will occur in the Murray cemetery. The deceased had been a continuous resident of Wells County for sixty-seven years. He was a son of the Rev. Elijah and Diana (Bowal) Sutton and was born on November 17, 1822, in Licking County, Ohio, about five miles from Newark. He was aged eighty years, eleven months, and nine days. He was the youngest of eight children and the last survivor of the large family. When he was fifteen years of age, his parents came to Indiana in 1837 and settled in this county on what is known as the old Sutton farm north of Murray, now owned by Harmon Frees. He lived in Murray and vicinity until about three years ago when he came to Bluffton to live with his daughters. Mr. Sutton was married on July 6, 1849, to Miss Margaret Daily, who died on July 6, 1870, leaving Mr. Sutton with a family of eight children, the youngest of whom was two years of age. One son, James, was crippled. He was for a number of years justice of the peace at Murray. Four daughters survive the deceased. They are Mesdames John Fink and John McCague, of this city, Mrs. Dora Clark, of Charles City, Iowa, and Mrs. Albert Courtney, of Murray. Mr. Sutton was always ready to help others and he was noted for his kindness during sickness. He was president of the Sutton family reunion organization from the time of the first meeting, twenty-two years ago and never missed but one reunion. Mrs. Clark was telegraphed Monday night and the funeral will be held as announced above unless word from her causes different arrangements.
